Soul Food’s Mardi Gras!

Soul Food’s Mardi Gras

Saturday February 18th
The Victoria, John Bright Street

With..

The Atlantic Players (Live)

Plus DJ Sets from…

Sam Redmore (Freestyle)
Soul Food Soundsystem
Plus special guests

It’s that time of year again folks!! Our annual Mardi Gras celebrations return! In true Deep South tradition, this is the biggest date on our calender and this year we’re bringing back the band that tore the roof off last years party…………The wonderful ATLANTIC PLAYERS!

The Atlantic Players combine a love of classic southern soul music with the contemporary sounds of the likes of Eli ‘Paperboy’ Reed and Aloe Blacc. Expect the sounds of Memphis, classic Stax, Northern Soul and of course ‘Atlantic Records’ bought to you live by one of (if not the finest!) funk and soul band in Birmingham currently.

DJ SUPPORT FROM…

SAM REDMORE – http://soundcloud.com/samredmore

Sam Redmore represents one of the shining lights from Birmingham’s clubnight scene. His weekly party ‘Freestyle’ has hosted some of the most exciting DJ’s from around the UK, including such legends Yam Who, Ashley Beedle and Crazy P, but the real star of the show is Sam himself.

Sam’s re edits have found themselves in the boxes of DJ’s all over the country and the (in) famous re edits eventually found their way into the hands of a certain Craig Charles who recently invited Sam onto his 6music show!

Sam is guaranteed to rock The Victoria to it’s very foundations with a mixture of soul, disco, funk, reggae and everything else inbetween!

Coldrice! Coldrice! Coldrice!

Soul Fooders!!

This Saturday, one of our favourite record labels ‘Coldrice‘, celebrates it’s tenth Birthday at The Hare and Hounds. To say these guys have been an influence on the music and culture that we listen and love is an understatement.

The story of Coldrice begun at the old Bar Academy on dale end where they hosted the likes of Soledad Brothers, Heavy Trash, David Viner and many more…

These memorable shows more often than not ended in after parties back at the labels studio on Fazeley Street, Digbeth, where impromptu collaborations took place and the label created a loyal fanbase that have pretty much followed them to every show. Some of the footage from these infamous afterparties was captured by the labels visual curator…Mr Radar…

For Soul Food Project, Coldrice have introduced us to so much great music (most of which is from Birmingham) and have given us some of the best nights out we’ve had in the city.

To celebrate this fact, we’ll be putting together a one off Soul Food Coldrice menu which will be available all day on Saturday November 26th at The Hare and Hounds….Think The Big Bang burger (the spiciest burger we can possible devise!), ‘Testify’ Chocolate Cheesecake and The Sex Beet Salad!

The line up is pretty much the greatest hits of Coldrice with Soul outfit and house band ‘Copter’ performing their first show in over a year, The Big Band (reforming for one night only), rockabilly duo Swampmeant and Blues man Mr David Viner all performing.

Saturday will be a night of debauchery, a night of a Bourbon shots and a night of celebration for what is one of the finest things to come out of Birmingham.

Viva Coldrice!

UB40, Keith Allen and Soul Food!

Tuesday gone, SFP experienced one of the most surreal days we’ve ever worked at The Hare and Hounds. UB40, one of the most successful reggae acts in the world, who’ve scored 3 number 1 UK singles and have introduced the majority of us to 60′s and 70′s reggae songs that we may of otherwise missed through their reinterpretations, as well as writing original material that combined the politics of the times, the angst of youth and the subsonic dub that the band were listening to at the time performed to a select few at the pub to celebrate the unveiling of a PRS plaque awarded to the venue for being the home of UB40′s first ever show in 1979.

A band that most of us would expect to see selling out stadiums globally were playing in a live room that holds no more than 130 people….At 12.30 on a Tuesday afternoon. Bizarre is the only word I can use to describe the experience. The band performed a 6 song set packed with the hits that they’ve become renowned for…Food For Thought, Red  Red Wine, Kingston Town and One In Ten all featured…

UB40 LIVE AT HARE AND HOUNDS

SFP were fortunate enough to be asked to feed the band and guests and what better showcase of our food than some huge pots of steaming hot Jambalaya, with breads, mango salsa’s and plenty of hot sauce.

Armed and ready to go we stood waiting for our first customer and up stepped Mr Keith Allen as customer number 1, who had nothing but nice words about the food (cue our chef Lizzy going weak at the knees) and the idea behind the brand.

By 2pm we were all done and ready to re open to the public, left with the realization that the day had only just really begun and that it was time to cook more Jambalaya!

All in a days work!

Chef’s Recipe: Chicken Piquant

Soul Food Project’s Head Chef Carl Finn, tells us more about one of the dishes we’ve been trialling for the Winter Menu…..

Chicken can be your friend, your enemy and you worst nightmare. Throughout my cooking years I have not shyed away from chicken but got very, very bored of the standard chicken breast with a bland sauce on a bed of over cooked vegetables.

When soul food came in to my life “praise beat”! my view on chicken changed as early Louisiana / Soul Food recipes were packed with chicken dishes (this was mainly due to the lack of land for larger livestock) so I taught myself to use the meat more effectively and then fell in love with the tender, moist, boney little birds.

I was handed “Real Cajun” by Donald Link fellow soul boy Matt Beck last week, a legendary New Orleans chef, who we’ve been following him for a while and the book came in time to get some inspiration for the new menu….

Find hear a link to Chicken Piquant, one of the dishes that really blew our taste buds when tried and tested.

More information on the new menu launch to follow soon………………………
