The Big Feast // Alum Rock

This Saturday we’re involved in perhaps the most unique event we’ve done so far at the Saltley Methodist Church on Alum Rock Road in Birmingham. The event which is being curated by the wonderful Rosina was set up to showcase the multiple uses of this great building and to show that the Church is still at the heart of this community.

On top of it’s weekly services, the Church hosts regular events that the diverse community attend religiously (excuse the pun!) varying from sewing workshops to kids classes, on top of a communal space for elders of the area to meet up, chew the fat and play some dominoes (as we witnesssed when we showed it).

In a time when the concept of community seems quite foreign, yet is probably needed more than ever, it’s heart warming to be asked to get involved with projects like this.

We toyed with various styles of food and options, but in the end opted for an old fashioned Soup Kitchen vibe, with people queuing up to be served by the chefs who cooked the food from a huge pot….Proper Soul Food!

We’re cooking up a huge pot of our Creole Chilli, made with molasses, coffee, halal mince, chillies, passata, garlic, bay leaves, cinnamon, which will be slow cooked throughout the day and served with some Cajun rice.

For the Vegetarians, we’re serving our classic Vegetable Gumbo, cooked with okra, corn, mushrooms, tomatoes & sweet potatoes cooked upon a base of celery, onions and pepper (The Holy Trinity). This will again be served with our Cajun rice.

We’ll also be serving Chicken Wings with a homemade Jerk rub from local lady ‘Auntie Winnie’.

If you’d like to come along and support this great cause, it’s only £7 (!) and there’s a handful of places left, just fire us an email… matt@soulfoodproject.co.uk
